Popsicle History and Origin of the Orange Creamsicle Recipe

The orange creamsicle, this tasty popsicle recipe with zesty orange and creamy vanilla, has roots in the heartland of America. Its birth can be traced back to the early 20th century when an 11-year-old boy named Frank Epperson from San Francisco accidentally left a cup of soda water mixture outside overnight. It was a cold night, and the mixture froze. The next morning, he found that it had frozen around the stirring stick and voila, the first popsicle was born.

Fast forward a few decades and the idea of combining fruit and cream into a popsicle came into the picture, leading to the birth of the Creamsicle we all know and love. The name “Creamsicle” (#ad) is a brand of this frozen dessert owned by Unilever, but the term has become synonymous with any ice pop that combines a fruity exterior with a creamy center. Our homemade version of the creamsicle recipe follows in this delightful tradition.

An immersion blender, also known as a stick or hand blender, is a kitchen tool that’s designed for blending soups, sauces, and other liquids directly in the pot or bowl in which they’re being prepared. It’s a fantastic tool to have in your culinary arsenal because it allows for quick, efficient blending without the need to transfer hot ingredients to a traditional blender, minimizing cleanup and maximizing convenience.

Silicone Popsicle Mold #ad

This is the mold that I use. I like this style specifically because you can use traditional wooden popsicle sticks. Other styles you will come across feature reusable sticks/handles which get quite annoying. Get yourself a mold that uses the classic wooden popsicle stick. This way you do not have to clean handles and can make them as fast as you can freeze them. This one is definitely my favorite.

If you use a popsicle mold like the one above that I like to use, you will want to grab a pack of popsicle sticks. Something that I have found is that popsicle sticks come in a variety of widths. If you are using a popsicle mold, this can be an issue because they need to fit properly. These popsicle sticks at 0.4″ wide, and match the ones that come with the mold.

A Grater For Zesting The Orange #ad

Using a proper zester is so important. This is the one that I just got. It is made by OXO, and all of their products have been quality. I like that is has silicone underneath to keep it from slipping while you are using it.

Please note that a testing grater is much finer than what you typically use for cheese, which is why you should have a zester. Zesting is used a lot in both baking and cooking. If you need any. help with zesting, send me an email cole@handycookbook.com

A Handheld Juicer #ad

The Classic Orange Creamsicle Popsicle Recipe You Need (7)

This juicer has been a new favorite in my drawer of kitchen tools. I ordered this one specifically because the whole thing is made from metal, and it is pretty solid. It also has a middle piece that allows you to switch between lemon and limes. This works well for small to medium oranges. When I was making this recipe my oranges were HUGE! So I actually cut them into 1/8th-sized triangles and then put them in the juicer. It worked perfectly. However, if you have arthritis or any issues with your hands, I would recommend getting this one instead, as it is more ergonomic and won’t hurt your hands.

After making a few batches of popsicles I ran out of the sleeves that came with the mold. I liked these ones better because they have a peel-away seal. The seal is an excellent addition because once the popsicles are frozen solid in the sleeves they can accidentally slide out when moving the popsicles around. Troubleshooting the Orange Creamsicle Popsicle Recipe

There could be moments when things don’t go as planned but worry not! Here are a few troubleshooting tips:

  1. Texture Issues: If the popsicle mixture isn’t smooth enough, simply blend it a little longer. If your blender struggles with the thickness of the mixture, you can add a bit more orange juice to help it along.
  2. Removing Popsicles from the Molds: If you’re having trouble getting your frozen creamsicles out of the molds, run the mold under warm water for a few seconds. This should help release them more easily.
  3. Popsicle Stick Placement: If the sticks are falling to one side, wait until the creamsicles are partially frozen before inserting the sticks. They should stand up straight in the semi-solid mixture.

Personal Experience with the Creamsicle Recipe

I first fell in love with orange creamsicles as a child. The mix of tangy fruit and cool, creamy sweetness was a revelation to my young palate. I still remember waiting for the ice cream truck to turn the corner, money clutched tightly in hand, ready to order my favorite summer treat. As an adult, recreating this popsicle recipe in my kitchen was both a nostalgic trip and a fun culinary experience.

Making this orange creamsicle recipe not only took me back to those lazy summer days, but it also gave me a newfound appreciation for the ingredients and processes that make this popsicle so special. And the best part? I can now enjoy it anytime I want!
