The Northern New England Review acquires First North American Serial Rights for each piece of poetry accepted for publication, after which all copyrights revert back to the author. We do ask to be acknowledged in any future re-printings or publications. Unfortunately, we are unable to offer payment at this time, but each author whose work is selected to appear in The Northern New England Review will receive two complimentary printed copies of the issue in which their work appears. We do our best to promote our authors all year long, regularly nominating contributors for awards such as the Pushcart Prize and Best of the Net.
Short Fiction
We value short prose that innovates and connects; imagery that provokes and astonishes. We want to see the extraordinary hidden within the mundane. We are looking for stories that make fault lines tremble and explore nested realities. We are looking for the peculiar, the wondrous, and the profound. But, most of all, we are looking for distinctive writing and unique voices. Are you reimagining “place” in your prose?
You may submit an original and previously unpublished work of short fiction during each submission period. Each short fiction submission should be no more than 2,500 words in length.

Creative Nonfiction
You may an original and previously unpublished work of creative nonfiction during each submission period. Each nonfiction submission should be no more than 2,500 words in length. There are no reading fees for submissions at this time. We do accept simultaneous submissions, but ask to be notified immediately if the work you’ve submitted has been accepted elsewhere.
We are looking for creative nonfiction that makes us pause and take note. We are looking for language-driven writing, essays with lines so arresting we find ourselves saying them aloud. We are looking for risks within the real and the reality within risks. We are looking for meditative stories but not overly analytical thinkpieces.

Hybrid Genre
We are looking for hybrid work that stuns and delights. We are looking for experimental yet heartfelt works that defy categorization. Test the limits of genre (e.g., propulsive narrative poetry, dialogue as verse, crossword-puzzle poem stories, memoir-in-verse). Surprise us.
You may an original and previously unpublished work of creative nonfiction during each submission period. Each hybrid submission should be no more than 1,000 words in length.
