Four lock up state-title spots: South Shore top performers in MIAA tournament (2024)

The MIAA high school state tournaments are now underway.

The South Shore will have a total of 58 basketball teams and 36 hockey teams in the tournament fields. Notre Dame Academy (Div. 1) and Duxbury (Div. 2) were the only area teams to secure No. 1 seeds heading into the postseason.

The action kicked off on Monday (Feb 26) with preliminary-round games. Bookmark this page to follow highlights throughout the tournament. Follow all the scores and the next day's schedule here.

Monday, March 11

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Maddie Oliver (16 points) and Reagan Dowd (14) starred as Norwell defeated Medway, 52-39, in the Div. 3 semifinals.

Sunday, March 10

BOYS HOCKEY

Cam Melone netted an overtime winner as Hanover defeated Stoneham, 4-3, in the Div. 4 semifinals.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Michael Porter scored 23 points, but Scituate lost to Sharon, 58-54, in the Div. 2 Elite 8.

GIRLS HOCKEY

Devon Moore, Caroline Hartnett and Luci DelGallo scored as Notre Dame Academy defeated Malden Catholic, 3-0, in the Div. 1 semifinals. Ava Larkin recorded the shutout.

Friday, March 8

GIRLS BASKETBALL

St. Mary's defeated Hanover, 47-31, in the Div. 3 Elite 8. Noey Giardina scored 9 points in the loss.

Norwell defeated Sandwich, 62-40, in the Div. 3 Elite 8 as Reagan Dowd scored 21 points off five 3-pointers. Maddie Oliver had 11 points, 13 rebounds and 8 assists while Alex Cassidy had a double-double (11 points, 11 rebounds).

Reese Bartlett scored 19 points in Bridgewater-Raynham's 61-48 loss to Woburn in the Div. 1 Elite 8.

Thursday, March 7

BOYS HOCKEY

Brady Walsh scored a pair of goals as Duxbury defeated Masconomet, 3-1, in the Div. 2 Elite 8.

Kyle Ready played well in goal, but Pembroke lost to Nauset, 4-1, in the Div. 3 Elite 8. Colin Blake scored the goal.

Hanover defeated Norwell, 2-1, in the Div. 4 Elite 8, as Mehki Bryan had a goal and an assist. Joe Perniola scored the goal for the Clippers in the loss.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Sarah Chenette (10 rebounds) scored 30 points, including two free throws in the closing seconds of regulation to send the game to overtime, but Cohasset lost to South Hadley, 53-46, in the Div. 4 Elite 8.

Weymouth lost to Wachusett, 67-44, in the Div. 1 Elite 8. Megan Doyle scored 22 points in the loss while Callie Flynn had 11.

GIRLS HOCKEY

Morgan Murphy (33 saves) recorded a shutout as Marshfield defeated Burlington, 2-0, in the Div. 2 Elite 8. Julia Lemire and Kayla Leonard scored the goals.

Archbishop Williams defeated Belmont/Watertown, 4-0, behind two goals from Catherine Lacey in the Div. 1 Elite 8.

Wednesday, March 6

BOYS HOCKEY

James Sullivan scored in the third period, but Scituate lost to Marblehead, 2-1, in the Div. 3 Elite Eight.

GIRLS HOCKEY

Caroline Doherty scored a goal, but Hingham lost to Malden Catholic, 4-1, in a Div. 1 Elite Eight game.

Zoey Madigan scored two goals as Duxbury defeated Milton, 2-1, in the Div. 2 Elite Eight. Sabrina Stone scored in the loss.

Holbrook lost to Douglas, 57-53, in the Div. 5 Sweet 16. Allen Brown scored 19 points in the loss while Armani Perkins had 16 and Dakari Dingle added 12.

Matt Youngquist scored 37 points as No. 38 Middleboro pulled off a 76-71 upset over Milford in the Div. 2 Sweet 16.

Abington fell to top-seeded Charlestown, 85-56, in the Div. 3 Sweet 16. Tyler Staiti scored 20 points while Connor Pease had 17 points, 14 rebounds and 4 assists.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Avery Gamble (18 points), Kam Derba (13) and Sarah Hilliard (11) led the way as Oliver Ames defeated Bedford, 55-51, in a Div. 2 Sweet 16.

Notre Dame Academy's Ava Orlando had 25 points, 9 steals and 8 assists in a 52-40 win over Nashoba in the Div. 2 Round of 16. Elle Orlando (10 points, 4 steals), Effie Giannopoulos (9 points, 8 rebounds) and Lola Griffin (8 points, 8 rebounds) also starred for No. 3 NDA (21-1).

Tuesday, March 5

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Reese Bartlett (17 points) scored a floater in just before time expired in overtime as No. 12 Bridgewater-Raynham upset No. 5 Wellesley, 43-42, in the Div. 1 Sweet 16. Brenna Woodbury added 12 points.

No. 13 Whitman-Hanson rallied from a 25-9 halftime deficit to defeat No. 4 Dartmouth, 40-38, in overtime in the Div. 2 Sweet 16. Freshman Maliah Pierre scored all 9 of her points in the fourth quarter. Dylan Hurley (11 points) and Jenna Mishou (12) powered the offense and had clutch shots late.

Megan Doyle had 27 points and 19 rebounds in Weymouth's 48-46 win over Needham in the Div. 1 Sweet 16. Callie Flynn had a double-double (14 points, 12 rebounds) and Lauren Hawes also played well.

Reagan Dowd scored 8 of her 14 points in the fourth quarter as Norwell defeated East Bridgewater, 44-34, in the Div. 3 Sweet 16. Maddie Oliver added 13 and Alex Cassidy had 11. Jack Pohl had 10 points in the loss.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Nick Adams (14 points) and Connor O'Hare (12) led Norwell to a 49-46 win over East Boston in the Div. 3 Sweet 16.

Canton lost to Somerset Berkley, 53-50, in the Div. 2 Sweet 16. Jamaal McConnell had 20 points and 13 rebounds in the loss.

No. 15 Scituate upset No. 2 Leominster, 55-48, in the Div. 2 Sweet 16 behind 31 points from Michael Porter. Brian Good added 11.

Monday, March 4

BOYS HOCKEY

Conal Mulkerrin, Paul Dzavik and Cam McKenna scored as Hingham defeated Braintree, 3-0, in the Div. 1 Round of 16.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Sarah Chenette scored 23 points and grabbed 7 rebounds as Cohasset defeated Frontier Regional, 56-32, in the Div. 4 Sweet 16. Addy Andrews chipped in 11 points and 7 rebounds. Molly Campbell, Natalia Kluza and Catherine Toomey also played well.

Noey Giardina scored 14 points as Hanver defeated Tantasqua, 52-28, to advance to the Div. 3 Elite 8. Olivia Damon added 8 points.

Alyssa Hopps scored 20 points and Niamh Gendron had 12, but Quincy lost to Lexington, 50-49, in the Div. 1 Sweet 16.

Sunday, March 3

GIRLS HOCKEY

Sarah McIntyre scored two goals as Marshfield defeated Leominster, 4-1, as the Rams advanced to the Div. 2 Elite 8 for the first time in program history. Julia Lemire and Kayla Leonard each scored one goal and Morgan Murphy played well in net.

Canton defeated Westwood, 2-0, to advance to the Div. 2 Elite 8 behind a shutout from Kate Budway. Izzy Cusack scored two goals.

TRACK & FIELD

Brockton's Lucas Andrade completed the triple crown by taking first place in the 55 meter hurdles at the Divisionals, All-States and New Englands. His time of 7.37 seconds at New Englands broke his own school record and is the 13th fastest time in the country. Nazier Blue Gomes and Antonio Tobon both had top-10 finishes in the hurdles and 600 meters.

Saturday, March 2

BOYS HOCKEY

Marshfield's Tommy Carroll scored at 4:09 of the second overtime to beat Reading, 2-1, in the Div. 1 Round of 16. Cam McGettrick had the other Marshfield goal, and goalie Kevin Murphy had a strong game. The 10th-seeded Rams (18-3-3) will play No. 18 Arlington Catholic (11-11-1) in the quarterfinals (details TBA).

Weymouth's Johnny Bell, Ryan Ferguson and Jack Browning scored in a 7-3 loss to Franklin in the Div. 1 Round of 16.

BC High's James Greer, of Milton, had the lone goal in a 2-1 loss to Catholic Memorial in the Div. 1 Round of 16.

Duxbury's Brady Walsh had a hat trick to lead the Dragons to a 5-1 win over Malden Catholic in Div. 2. Chris Gillis and Mike Yucius added goals for No. 10 Duxbury (12-8-4), which plays No. 15 Masconomet (15-7) in the quarterfinals (details TBA).

Canton's Joey Ryan and Brendan Tourgee staked the defending Div. 2 champion Bulldogs to a 2-0 lead, but No, 15 Masconomet rallied in the third period for a 4-2 win in the Round of 16.

Whitman Hanson's Zach Boss had the lone goal, scored shorthanded, in a 3-1 loss to Concord-Carlisle in the second round of the Div. 2 playoffs.

Pembroke's Brandon Perry and Kevin Murrin scored, and goalie Kyle Ready posted his second straight playoff shutout as the No. 8 Titans (13-5-4) beat Grafton, 2-0, to advance to the Div. 3 quarterfinals on March 6 vs. No. 1 Nauset (20-1-1).

Scituate's James Sullivan scored twice in a 6-1 win over Watertown in the Div. 3 Round of 16. Grady Spinale, Johnny Donahue, Luke Ryan and Owen Lochiatto each added a goal for the No. 3 Sailors (17-5-2), who will play No. 6 Marblehead (14-9-1) in the quarterfinals.

Norwell's Matt Cerutti, Aedan Coyle and Quinn Simmons scored in a 3-0 win over Lunenburg/Ayer-Shirley in the Div. 4 Round of 16. Joe Perniola and Nolan Petrucelli had assists for the third-seeded Clippers (17-5-1), who will play a quarterfinal on March 7 against No. 6 Hanover (13-9). The Hawks eliminated No. 11 Old Rochester Regional, 4-1.

GIRLS HOCKEY

Addy Harrington and Zoey Madigan each scored twice to lift Duxbury to a 4-1 win over No. 17 Gloucester in the Div. 2 Round of 16. The top-seeded Dragons (21-3) will face No. 9 Milton (19-4-1) in the quarterfinals on March 6.

Milton's Molly Murphy's second goal of the day, in overtime, lifted the Wildcats to a 4-3, come-from-behind win over Pembroke in the Div. 2 Round of 16. Sabrina Stone and Mairin Hart scored the other goals for No. 9 Milton (19-4-1), which overcame a 3-1 deficit at the second intermission to advance to a March 6 quarterfinal matchup against No. 1 Duxbury (21-3). Maria Cantino, Addison Nee and Jen Birolini scored for No. 8 Pembroke (16-6).

Hingham's Caroline Doherty scored twice, once shorthanded, and Alexa Harris added a goal as the Harborwomen beat Haverhill/Pentucket/North Andover, 3-0, in Div. 1. Goalie Izzy McGarr posted the shutout. No. 5 Hingham (18-5-1) will play No. 4 Malden Catholic (15-3-4) in the quarterfinals.

Archbishop Williams' Caroline Batchelder and Emily Fleming scored in a 2-1 upset over No. 6 Methuen/Tewksbury in Div. 1. The 11th-seeded Bishops (11-10-2) will play No. 14 Belmont (15-2-3) in the quarterfinals on March 7.

Top-seeded Notre Dame Academy got goals from Reese Engel, Chase Harmon and Sarah White in a 3-1 win over No. 16 Braintree in Div. 1. NDA (16-4-2) will play a quarterfinal against the winner of Sunday's game between No. 8 Pope Francis (13-7-2) and No. 9 Peabody (17-4).

BOYS BASKETBALL

Carver's J.J. Grimes scored 20 points in a 64-61 loss to Nantucket in Div. 4. Tyler Lennox (14 points) and Robbie Peterson (12) also starred for the Crusaders, who trailed by 17 in the third quarter but had a chance to tie it at the buzzer.

No. 5 Oliver Ames survived an upset scare from No. 28 Silver Lake, 43-40, in the Div. 2 Round of 32. Sarah Hilliard scored 16 points in the win. Cassidy Conroy had 15 points in the loss.

Alyssa Hopps scored 22 points and Niamh Gendron had 15 points in Quincy's 55-36 win over Hopkinton in the Div. 1 Round of 32.

Darby Mento notched a hat trick in Plymouth's 3-1 win over Beverly in the Div. 2 first round.

Kayleigh Koen scored both goals as No. 7 Canton fended off an upset bid from No. 26 Hanover, 2-1, in a Div. 2 first-round game.

Ella Skieber scored two goals and Mia Dunphy recorded a shutout in Pembroke's 5-0 win over Whitman-Hanson/Silver Lake in the Div. 2 first-round game.

Cam McKenna scored two goals and Paul Dzavik had a goal and an assist in Hingham's 5-0 win over Burlington in Div. 1 first-round action.

Luke Tropeano (four goals) netted a double-overtime off a feed from Zach Boss in Whitman-Hanson's double-overtime win over Algonquin in Div. 2 first-round action.

Andrew Gaffney scored a winner in double-overtime as No. 24 Braintree upset No. 9 Westford Academy, 3-2, in a Div. 1 first-round game.

Kyle Ready recorded a shutout in Pembroke's 3-0 win over Taunton in the Div. 3 Round of 32.

Mike Hussey had a goal and three assists in Duxbury's 6-2 win over Oliver Ames in a Div. 2 first-round battle. Kaden Bono starred in goal in Plymouth North's 2-1 win over Falmouth.

Maddie Oliver had 18 points, 13 rebounds and 6 assists as Norwell defeated Notre Dame (Worcester), 54-36, in the first round of Div. 3. Reagan Dowd (9 points, 13 rebounds, 6 steals, 5 assists), Alex Cassidy (9 points) and Heidi Warren (6 points) also played well.

Brenna Woodbury (16 points, 7 rebounds, 6 steals, 5 assists) led Bridgewater-Raynham to a 62-51 win over Belmont in Div. 1 first-round action. Libby Cronin added 14 points and Camden Strandberg had 12.

Ava MacDonald scored 14 points in Braintree's 57-40 win over Chelmsford in the Div. 1 first-round battle.

Maggie Bedard scored a game-high 18 points in Fontbonne Academy's 52-47 loss to Wilmington in the first round of Div. 3 action. Lilly Blow (13 points, 12 rebounds) posted her seven consecutive double-double and Jess Laflamme had 7 points.

Addi Monahan, Mary Kate Flynn and Noey Giardina each scored 8 points in Hanover's 38-13 win over Saint Paul in the Div. 3 first round.

Alissa Marcella scored 19 points, but Pembroke lost to Reading, 62-50, in a Div. 2 first-round game. Fay D'Angelo and Elli Tam each had 8 points.

Connor Pease had 18 points and 18 rebounds in Abington's 72-68 win over Medway in Div. 3 first-round action. Tyler Staiti and Jake McSharry (7 rebounds, 7 blocks) each had 15 points. Kingston Maxwell added 14 points and 8 assists while Michael Reilly chipped in 9 points and 7 rebounds.

Norwell defeated Cardinal Spellman, 59-36, in a Div. 3 first-round game as Ronan Coffey scored 14 points and Connor O'Hare had 13.

Canton's Zaza Francoeur 20 points led the Bulldogs to a 63-47 win over Stoughton in a Div. 2 first-round game.

Playing in its first MIAA tournament game ever, New Heights defeated South Hadley, 68-67, in overtime in a Div. 4 first-round game. Christian Dalton scored 22 points and had 6 assists while Khamari Gillings had a double-double (11 points, 10 rebounds). Raymond Miller added 13 points and Marvens Laplante had 12.

Wednesday, Feb. 28

GIRLS HOCKEY

Marshfield defeated Norwell/Scituate/Abington, 2-1, behind goals from Gabby Reardon and Julia Lemire in a Div. 1 first-round game. That was the Rams first-ever state-tournament win.

Caroline Batchelder scored a hat trick in Archbishop Williams' 4-3 win over Waltham in Div. 2 first-round action.

Emma Walsh and Cassidy Gibbons each had a goal and an assist in Braintree's 5-1 win over Needham in a Div. 1 first-round game. Eva Surette stopped 30 shots.

Mary Lovett scored two goals and Lila Chamoun recorded her 10th shutout of the season in Milton's 3-0 win over Norwood in the first round of Div. 2. Nayeli Thayer tallied the other goal.

BOYS HOCKEY

Brandon Tourgee and Ryan Elrick both scored twice in Canton's 6-1 win over North Attleboro in a Div. 2 first-round game.

Eoin Fasullo stopped 31 shots as No. 25 Plymouth South upset No. 8 King Philip.

Teddy Devoe tallied two goals and Kevin Murphy recorded a shut in Marshfield's 4-0 Div. 1 first-round win over Needham.

Quinn Simmons scored two goals in Norwell's 3-1 win over Groton-Dunstable in Div. 4 first-round action.

No. 28 Weymouth upset No. 5 Archbishop Williams, 2-0, in Div. 1 first-round action behind 28 saves from Grady Salfity. Brody Dearden and Ryan Ferguson scored the goals.

James Sullivan became Scituate's all-time scoring leader thanks to an OT goal as the No. 3 Sailors survived an upset bid from No. 30 Melrose, 2-1, in the first round of Div. 3. Owen Lochiatto assisted on the winning goal.

BOYS BASKETBALL

Matt Delcore scored 30 points and Jacob Derochea had 24 as Pembroke defeated Weston, 79-67, in the Div. 3 first round.

No. 40 Duxbury upset No. 25 South, 50-49, as Zach Falls (17 points) hit the winning free throw with 3.9 seconds remaining in a Div. 2 prelim.

Archbishop Williams rallied from down 9 points in the fourth quarter to defeat Amherst-Pelham, 63-62, in a Div. 2 prelim. Tristan Rodriguez scored 30 points and Colin Waldron had 12 points off four 3-pointers.

No. 39 Calvary Chapel Academy upset No. 26 Brooke Charter, 47-34, behind Seamus Hanlon's 16 points in the Div. 5 prelim. Gabe Antonio (10 points) and Derek Babineau (9) also played well.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Whitman-Hanson held off North Quincy's comeback bid to pull out a 63-60 Div. 2 first-round win. W-H's offense was a balanced effort from Dylan Hurley (15 points), Jenna Mishou (15), Lillie MacKinnon (15) and Taryn Leonard (14). The Raiders rallied from down 52-37 at the end of the third quarter. Ava Bryan scored a team-high 19 points in the loss while Autumn O'Campos had 18. Maeve Powers (12 points) and Caroline O'Donnell (10) also played well.

Shania Gardner had 16 points and Jenna Oman added 12 in East Bridgewater's 43-31 win over Quabbin in the first round of the Div. 3 tournament.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

Carley Fernandez scored 14 points as Plymouth North defeated Concord-Carlisle in a Div. 1 prelim.

Eliana Jackson scored 21 points in Archbishop Williams' 53-49 win over Ursuline Academy in a Div. 3 prelim.

Ally Johnson scored 19 points as Blue Hills defeated St. Mary Parish, 47-24, in a Div. 4 prelim. Kathleen Murphy had a double-double (10 points, 12 rebounds). Bridget Devine (7 rebounds) and Bella Sulfaro (4 assists) both chipped in 8 points.

Brockton defeated North Andover, 30-29, in a Div. 1 prelim. Tajeiha Madison scored a team-high 10 points while Nevaeh King scored the winning 3-pointer.

New Heights defeated Bromfield, 69-34, in a Div. 4 prelim as Navaeh Stephney (10 points, 7 rebounds), ji*zzelle Stephney (13 points, 5 rebounds, 5 steals), Naziiah Herisse (14 points) and Nya Isidore (12 rebounds) played well.

Kelsi Lanza and Lilianna Parmeggiani (18 in second half) both scored 21 points in Silver Lake's 59-44 win over Agawam in the Div. 2 prelim. Cassidy Conroy chipped in 9 points and 14 rebounds.

Tyler Lennox (15 points), Jack Balzarini (14) and Jameson Helms (12) led the way in Carver's 79-42 win over Excel Academy in a Div. 4 prelim.

Jack Cullinan scored 30 points and Luke Moore had 24 points in Cohasset's 83-59 win over Upper Cape Tech in the Div. 4 preliminary round.

Jake Brilliant (28 points) hit a shot with 2 seconds remaining to send the game into overtime and No. 40 Marshfield upset No. 25 Lynn English, 100-99, in a Div. 1 prelim. Matt Ellwood and Gio Joseph both finished with 21 points while James Molloy and Mike Scully had 12.

Will Savage scored 20 points while Edric Louissaint added 18 in Weymouth's 67-63 Div. 1 prelim win over Barnstable. Gill Dolan chipped in 14.

Nyisah Miranda led all scorers with 19 points in Avon's 74-51 win over Atlantis Charter in the Div. 5 prelim. Thomas Edwards (14 points) and Josiah Guerrier (15) also played well.
